The task of data compression for wireless weather data dissemination requires the review of prior formats and compression techniques for meteorological data. The weather data products could be categorized into three category: textual data, gridded graphical data and iconic graphical data. To organize hybrid data with those different formats, several current data protocols used for meteorological data, such as BUFR, GRIB, ARL, RAOB and AWIN, have been studied. We also study the compression techniques used in those weather data presentation methods.
